The Forbes State Forest contains over 20 separate tracts with a total acreage is over 50,000 acres. Trails within the forest are open to mountain biking. Most trails are kept clear over the summer. Trails within the forest are open to horseback riding. Six miles of trails. Most portions of the trails are easy walking with some sections of moderate difficulty. Twelve miles of the Laurel Highlands National Scenic trail traverse the forest. Many other miles of local hiking trails provide ample day hiking and backpacking opportunities. Primitive campers spending no more than one night at a campsite typically do not need a camping permit, with certain exceptions.
